As a student at Radnor High School and a long-time resident, days spent in Wayne after school are almost compulsory. I was quite offended by the parent and shopkeeper’s views on teenagers as they are quite biased. Ever since 6th grade, I’ve gone into Wayne for something to do. However, the recent effort to put a stop on shoplifting and vandalism has highly deterred my interest in visiting Wayne. Now, just because I am a teenager, I am automatically a shoplifting suspect. I must leave my backpack at the front of stores even though I have absolutely no intentions of stealing any goods. If other people can get away with stealing from a store, I’m sure they could also steal out of my backpack thus rendering the enforcement useless.
I do not agree with the vandalistic events that have occurred just recently as they are foolish and pointless, but why force all teenagers to suffer as a result of one person’s actions? Clearly the amount of kids aimlessly wandering the streets after school and on weekends is a cry for action. If the shopkeepers want to complain about disruptive behaviors, let them. It isn’t going to change anything, because kids are kids. Giving us a place to go would at least drastically lower the possibilities of these actions reoccurring. So maybe for once, Wayne should stop opening fancy restaurants and bars for adults and start considering giving kids a place to go.
I got pissed off after the ridiculous article they wrote bashing teenagers, so I decided to respond. Go buy this week's Surburban and you'll see what I'm talking about.
